ADSL - Introduction

This is a kind of connection to high-speed internet, from 1 Mbps to 160 Mbps, which is done through the wires of the telephone network. In addition, this system can be used simultaneously internet and the phone.

 

Their initials form an acronym for the phrase Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line for translation into Spanish is Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.

 

The DSL connection with an asymmetrical technology, ie transmissions are not the same for sending data for the reception. Thus, speed is 1 Mbps sending and receiving 8 Mbps.

 

Requirements

 

The main condition to install ADSL is to have an active telephone line. Subsequently should know the coverage of the place where the project is to install the connection.

This coverage does not exist in Spain. Moreover, the connection speed is not the same in all places, as in urban areas is much higher than in small towns.

 

The requirements that must have a computer to install this internet connection are:

 

·  CD-room unit.

 

·  Operating System Windows or Macintosh.

 

·  32 MB of RAM.

 

·  400 MB free on hard disk.

 

·  Ethernet or USB interface.

 

Advantages

 

The ADSL has certain advantages over the basic modem connection. Among them:

 

·  Great connection speed.

 

·  It allows simultaneous use of telephone and internet.

 

·  Connection permanent.

 

·  Existing infrastructure, as it connects to the telephone line.

 

·  Flat rate pricing and unlimited time.

 

Cable

 

This Internet connection is based on fiber-optic cables. Their distribution occurs through the structure of the cable television through a cable modem type.

 

This type of connection began to be used in Spain in the year 1995. Since then it has evolved to the point of becoming an existing service in big cities.

 

Comparison

 

At present, ADSL and cable are competing with each other because they are two very similar lines. Nevertheless, the two have certain characteristics that differentiate them.

 

The DSL connection is the main characteristic speed, which is higher than the cable. In addition, it uses the infrastructure of the telephone line, so it can reach more homes.

 

For its part, the cable also offers Internet, telephone services and television. Its big disadvantage is that only reaches urban areas.

 

Remarks

 

To find out if they can install ADSL in a home you have to address the major mobile carriers. In their websites with tools to find out if a particular phone number have coverage.
