Carnivals (Spain)

Carnivals are held in almost every corner of Spain. Some of the best known are those of Cadiz, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Sitges.

 

The celebration of this festival usually occurs in February and lasts from one to three weeks, depending on the venue.The celebration of el Carnival has its origins in the Roman Empire.

 

Later, in the Middle Ages is disseminated by all the territories colonized by the Spaniards. This festival is characterized by the costumes, masks, music and jolgorio.

 

Cádiz Carnival

 

Here the Carnival has its origins in the fifteenth century and is reinforced when the city became the main port of the Spanish Empire to America. Since then, the festival is held every February despite opposition from the Church, initially regarded as a feast of wantonness and lust.
