Digital Terrestrial Television - Introduction (Spain)

This is a new form of television that is transmitted through modulation digital, rather than analog televisions that use traditional.

In 2010 analogue transmission definitely disappear, so that all broadcasters have to use Digital Terrestrial Television, also known as DTT.

Advantages of DTT

The main advantages of this type of TV are:

·  High quality video and audio that reaches even to the quality of a DVD.

·  Transmission of a greater number of channels for each UHF channel.

·  Extra services such as subtitles in movies and overview (16:9) without cuts or black bands.

·  Interactive content and services such as electronic program guide known as EPG (Electronic Program Guide).

This type of television is open, so do not pay any fee to view it. Despite this, some chains can offer channels closed for payment.

Coverage

To begin to enjoy the Digital Terrestrial Television first thing you should know is whether the place where they are going to install television coverage available.

The Ministry of Industry and the websites of the major operators have TDT tools to determine whether a town has coverage simply by entering the zip code.

According to the National Technical Plan of DTT approved by Royal Decree 944/2005 of 29 June current coverage in Spain is 85%. In 2010 the coverage will be 96% for private channels and 98% for the public.

Viewing DTT

To view DTT, both for an individual user to a community of neighbors, we must do the following:

·  Adapting the conventional UHF antenna: it consists of the placement at the top of the same number of modules amplifiers based on the number of channels that are received.

This facility can only be done by specialists entered in the Register of Installers Telecommunications of the Ministry of Science and Technology. They should also be certified by the Secretary of State for Telecommunications of the Ministry of Industry.

·  Have a receiver signal TDT: each of the houses you want to enjoy this television should have installed one of these devices:

- External: connects directly to television through a euroconector or through a conventional antenna connection. We call them Set-Top Box (STB).

- Integrated: these are installed inside the televisions. The newly acquired aircraft have them.

Remarks

Generally, buildings constructed from 1998, already have the facilities and necessary features for connecting the Digital Terrestrial Television.

In February 2005 the Commission was formed to follow up the transition to Digital Terrestrial Television. Its main objective is to design strategies for the transition process and mechanisms to control the TDT.
