Pregnancy is a delicate time
for both the mother and the fetus to why visits to the specialist is essential.
The medical specialty that deals with the development of pregnancy within
gynecology is obstetrics.
The medical examinations and
conducting numerous tests intended to verify that no abnormalities occur in the
state of health of the mother and fetal development is
normal.
Tests in the
first week of pregnancy
The first twelve weeks of
pregnancy are those that relate to the first trimester of pregnancy. The first
visit to the gynecologist or obstetrician must occur at the beginning of
pregnancy and repeated on a monthly basis in order to carry out tests such as
the following:
· Overview of health.
· Ecografías to visualize the
interior of the uterus and check that everything is normal. They gradually will
be repeated throughout the process of gestation.
· Analytic to know the state
of health, check hormone levels and detect infectious diseases such as rubella
or toxoplasmosis.
Evidence of
the week 13 to 26 of pregnancy
The medical visits
tend to occur every 15 days. At the beginning of the second quarter some tests
are performed to detect problems in the developing fetus. They are necessary
especially in women over 35. Some of these tests are:
· Triple Screening: a blood test that
determines the likelihood that the baby will suffer some kind of chromosomal
alterations.
· Amniocentesis: consists of an
abdominal puncture through which amniotic fluid is extracted for later
analysis. Conducting this test involves, among others, the risk of abortion. It
serves, for example, to determine if the fetus will develop the Down Syndrome.
· O`Sullivan test is used to detect
gestational diabetes. This is a type of diabetes that arose for the
first time during pregnancy and then can return to disappear. Usually performed
at the end of the second quarter.
Tests in the
last weeks of pregnancy
The visits to the
specialist occur almost on a weekly basis in the third trimester of
pregnancy. As with any pregnancy tests such as ultrasound to monitor the
normal process and analysis to monitor the health of the mother.
As we approach the moment of
birth is checking the status of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid to
act in the event of any significant abnormality.
